Hello everyone,

I want to get several BILLY shelves from IKEA to store a large collection of heavy reference books and textbooks. I’m wondering which versions or designs of the BILLY shelves are best suited for the weight of these books. Stability and load capacity of the individual shelves are especially important to me, as well as any tips on reinforcement or suitable accessories.

Can you share from experience which models work best for heavy books? Do you use specific shelves, reinforcements, or system combinations that make the shelving more durable and able to handle the load? I want to avoid the shelves sagging or the entire unit becoming unstable.

I’m looking forward to your opinions and practical advice!

That sounds like a fun challenge! Books really are the best little furniture helpers, aren’t they? 😉

I have two 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide BILLY shelves myself, and I totally understand the concern about sagging. A great tip from a friend was to reinforce the shelves underneath with simple aluminum profiles (from a hardware store) – this can be done discreetly and adds a lot of stability.

Also, using shelves with a depth of 28 cm (11 inches) helps improve load capacity and looks more elegant, in my opinion.

And very important: securely fix the shelves to the wall, it works wonders against wobbly constructions :-)

Good luck building your book fortresses!
