Hello everyone,

I am currently considering buying a Billy bookcase from Ikea, but I want to approach it more deliberately. My main question for you is: Which Billy bookcases are particularly stable and durable when used not only for light decoration but also for heavier books and binders?

I understand that there are different options (heights, widths, materials), and often the type of backing and feet can also play a role. Additionally, I am interested in any extra measures that can improve stability, such as wall anchors or reinforced shelves.

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations, especially for models that have proven reliable in the long term. Thanks in advance!

Which Billy shelves are particularly stable and durable when used not only for light decoration but also for heavier books and binders?

In general, the stability of Billy shelves depends strongly on the specific model:

– The 80 cm (31.5 inch) wide versions are more stable than the narrower 40 cm (15.7 inch) models because the carcass is thicker and the bonding is more robust.

– The 202 cm (79.5 inch) height (standard) is more stable than the shorter versions, as taller shelves usually have a firmer back panel and additional reinforcements.

– Solid wood is not available for Billy shelves, but newer models use thicker particleboard (about 16 mm (0.63 inch)); older Billys sometimes had only 12 mm (0.47 inch) shelves, which tend to sag under heavier loads.

– Reinforced back panels made of thin metal or multiple wood panels significantly increase shear strength.

Additionally, I recommend:
– Anchoring the shelves securely to the wall, especially if they are tall and loaded with heavy books.

– Stacking heavier items and placing them on lower shelves to distribute the load evenly.

– If possible, using special shelves with metal reinforcement. Alternatively, you can cut and install thicker boards yourself.

Conclusion: For heavy books, I recommend the large 80 cm Billy version with a strong back panel, wall anchoring, and full use of the height.

All other versions are better suited for lighter use.

Additionally: install reinforced shelves. Regular shelves will otherwise bend.

Interesting, but I would add that the term "strong backing panel" is relative. Usually, it’s just a thin particleboard. It’s worth asking specifically which generation it is, as Ikea has changed the materials over time.

Also: Are there any practical experience reports on how long these shelves actually hold up under full load without visible sagging or wobbling?

Some people use additional shelves or support braces to reduce sagging – wouldn’t that be more sensible than relying solely on the standard design?

I’m also puzzled that wall mounting is often mentioned without noting that the quality and type of fasteners are crucial. Unfortunately, many users are either lazy or unsure about the installation. Are there proven tips?

In short: For me, there is still a need to support the stability claims with concrete examples or long-term observations.
