Hello everyone,

I am currently considering getting a BILLY shelf from IKEA, but I have read and heard several times that some versions of these shelves are more durable and better suited for daily use than others. My question is: Based on your experience, which BILLY shelves (for example regarding material thickness, finish, adjustable shelves, or special versions) are particularly long-lasting in use, both in terms of stability and the surface?

I am looking for a model that is as resistant as possible to warping, scratches, or sagging, since I plan to use it frequently and there are children in my home. What variants does IKEA offer in general, and what are your best tips for maximizing the lifespan of a BILLY shelf?

Painted surfaces are more uniform and can be sanded or repainted

I think this idea is often overrated. No, it’s not a mystery that you should treat a BILLY shelf professionally like designer furniture. It’s an inexpensive everyday product, people.

Anyone who thinks they can create brand-new shelving masterpieces with fine tools and a can of paint is mistaken.

If you want something durable, you should think one step further and not only focus on the material but also consider the location, the usage, and a certain quality when purchasing. A well-installed, simple melamine shelf that is properly maintained will last longer than an "elegantly" painted model that is constantly being pushed around.

Hi everyone 🙂

I think GALEO4 makes a good point. A BILLY shelf is not a premium product, but rather practical and functional.

I recommend the melamine-coated versions for everyday use, especially when children are involved. This is mainly due to ease of cleaning and scratch resistance.

Of course, you can do a lot to maintain the shelf, but often it’s the combination of proper assembly, wall mounting, and careful use of space that helps the shelf last the longest.

For example, I have had a melamine-white BILLY shelf for almost 10 years that is used daily and still looks great. Simply avoid placing heavy loads on the upper shelves and wipe it down occasionally 🙂

In summary: If durability is a priority, the shelves should at least be secured to the wall, equipped with stronger shelves, and preferably the lacquered version should be chosen.

The melamine-coated surface is durable but more prone to chipping at the edges.

Be careful with moisture – the panels will swell. Both versions are child-friendly with careful use.
