Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat more specific question about storage solutions for the KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA: which baskets or boxes actually fit well into the individual compartments of the KALLAX?

I have tried a few options already, but either the baskets are too large and don’t fit properly, or they are too small and look lost. I’m also interested in the material choice, as I’m looking for a balance between durability and appearance.

Has anyone had practical experience with baskets that fit exactly or at least very well into the KALLAX modules? If so, which dimensions and materials would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for any help and tips!

The original KALLAX boxes fit best. The dimensions are 33x33x33 cm (13x13x13 inches). For fabric baskets, it is best to choose similar sizes; otherwise, they may stick out or not fit properly.

Hey 🙂 I would say the best thing about KALLAX is definitely its flexibility!

I like to use light-colored fabric baskets – they fit perfectly and add a cozy touch to the room. If you want stability, go for baskets with wooden or metal reinforcements; they keep their shape and still look good.

And a little tip: try baskets that are a bit softer. They slide in easily and can even accommodate slight variations in dimensions without any problem. Good luck with your furnishing! 🙂

I believe the intended use should also be taken into account here.

That might be true, but KALLAX boxes do not always offer the most efficient use of storage space. Often, the internal dimensions are slightly smaller than the external ones, and with baskets of varying structural stability, such as woven baskets versus fabric boxes, there are rarely considered issues.

You should also carefully evaluate the stability of fabric boxes, especially if heavy items are intended to be stored. In my opinion, plastic baskets with non-slip bottoms are often more suitable in these cases.

I would like to add a brief note here. When we talk about baskets that really fit well, the main factor is compatibility with the exact KALLAX dimensions.

The KALLAX compartments have an internal width of approximately 33 cm (13 inches) and a depth of 39 cm (15 inches). Many baskets are only designed with a base measurement of 33 x 33 cm (13 x 13 inches) and often lack sufficient depth, which can result in empty space at the back of the KALLAX compartments.

You should critically assess the stability of fabric baskets

I agree with that, especially cheaper fabric baskets can be too unstable in depth.

My tip: baskets made of sturdy plastic, preferably transparent or colored, and pay attention to the depth. Wooden boxes with precise measurements are also great if you like the look.

Wow, I love the topic of storage – and KALLAX is simply brilliant for DIY organization! 😊

I’ve tried colorful fabric bins from different manufacturers myself, and they work fantastic! They are usually a bit more flexible in size, fit well inside, and look great. I also prefer bins with handles because it’s easy to pull them out that way.

My personal favorite are bins about 33x33x38 cm (13x13x15 inches). This size gives you enough storage space at the back without anything sticking out in front.

Just give it a try—that’s the great thing about KALLAX, you can stay creative! Have fun organizing! 🙂
