Hello everyone,

I have the following issue and hope to find some helpful advice here: my Ikea Hemnes dresser drawers keep sticking, especially the bottom two. The sticking presents itself as the drawers only pulling out with a lot of force or sometimes getting completely stuck.

I have already checked for loose screws but didn’t find any obvious damage. The drawer slides look normal to me, but I’m not sure if I’m inspecting them correctly or if normal signs of wear can actually cause these problems.

Does anyone have experience with the most common causes of Hemnes drawers sticking? Are there any specific maintenance or adjustment tips? I use the dresser quite normally, so I suspect this might be a typical sign of aging.

I’m looking forward to your assessments and especially concrete tips on how to fix the sticking without having to take the entire dresser apart.

Regarding the wooden strips, I need to clarify what you mean by sanding. Wouldn't that damage the surface?

Sanding is useful in small amounts to remove rough spots or distortions. It’s best to use fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 120 to 180). You should proceed carefully and evenly to avoid visible damage to the surface.

In my experience, lightly re-oiling or waxing afterward helps to restore the protection.

I would also recommend ensuring that the rail is not mounted too tightly. If the screws are over-tightened, it can cause high friction resistance and result in jamming.

Great topic! I know this problem from personal experience – it’s really frustrating when drawers stick. But: don’t panic!

When you take the drawers out, also check the wooden runners and the slots in the dresser. Tiny dust particles, hair, or even small wood splinters can block smooth movement. A thorough cleaning with a fine dust cloth and, if necessary, some lubricant like paraffin or silicone spray works wonders!

I once lightly sanded all the runners on my Hemnes cabinet and then carefully oiled them – since then, the drawers have been sliding smoothly. Just give it a try and keep at it!

Wow, what a great discussion here! I’d like to add how important it is not to overload the drawers. Hemnes is sturdy, but every dresser has its limits.

Additionally, you can sometimes attach small felt pads inside on the sides, which cushion the contact between wooden slats and the drawer sides. This ensures smooth operation and protects the surface from extra wear.

Give this a try—it really makes a difference!
