Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of assembling an Ikea Hemnes shelf unit completely without the included instruction manual. Since I don’t have the manual, I’m looking for tips and experiences on how to best identify the individual parts and assemble them correctly without relying on the usual step-by-step guide. I would really appreciate any advice on the process, tools you used, and common pitfalls to watch out for. What strategies have you applied to ensure a smooth assembly? Are there perhaps hidden markings on the wooden parts or screws that indicate a particular order? For my planning, it would also be helpful to know roughly how much time I should expect for assembly without the instructions. Thank you in advance for your input!

For the drawers of the Hemnes shelving unit:
- Start by assembling the side panels. These are often designed with overlaps for added stability.
- Connect the front and back panels to the sides using dowels and screws.
- When sliding the drawers in, pay close attention to the runners, as these are often a weak point if not installed precisely.
- The bottom of the drawers is usually a thin panel that slides into a groove, so be careful not to twist or break it.
- Finally, attach the handles, which are often fixed with small screws.

Be cautious with the plastic glides: excessive pressure can easily cause damage.

How exactly should I proceed with assembling the drawers? They seem to consist of several parts and the connection is a bit more complex.

I would say: keep it cool! Remember, drawers are almost always built similarly, even at Ikea. Side panels, back panel, bottom, and front. And once all the screws are loosely in place, you can align everything properly before tightening everything up. And take a coffee break every now and then – sometimes everything suddenly looks much clearer ☕.

Thank you very much, that is a very valuable tip. The idea of keeping the screws loose now makes a lot more sense to me.

I am currently working on the individual side panels. How can I tell if they should be installed at the front or the back of the furniture? And how important is it to maintain the correct orientation of the boards? Some parts seem to have a specific grain pattern or surface treatment.

The correct orientation of the wooden parts is crucial for the stability and the visual outcome. With Ikea Hemnes, you can often identify the front side by its smoother, painted surface and the grain pattern, which should face outward. The back panels are thinner and less finished.

Some parts also have holes and recesses only on the front side. Check these features before assembly. For side panels, the position of the holes for drawer slides and shelves must be considered: these are usually present on only one side and thus determine the installation.

This is important for a precise fit and the proper functioning of the drawers later on.

The front side always has a smooth surface with holes for drawers/slide rails. The back side is thinner and not painted.

Important: Follow the correct sequence when tightening the screws. First, screw in all screws loosely, then tighten them diagonally to prevent distortion.
