Hello everyone,

I am looking for practical and effective tips on how to properly care for my Ikea Hemnes furniture series. I am especially interested in how to maintain the treated solid wood surfaces in an attractive condition without using harsh cleaning agents that might damage the varnish or paint.

How do you clean and care for your HEMNES furniture, particularly when it comes to the sensitive surfaces? Do you use special care products, home remedies, or is there a recommended routine to preserve the natural wood grain and color finish over the years?

I have also been considering whether regular oiling is advisable or if it is better to rely on certain water-based cleaning solutions.

I would appreciate it if someone could share their experiences!

I simply use a damp cloth without any cleaning agents and dry the surface immediately afterwards. This way, I avoid water stains. Occasionally, I apply a furniture oil specifically designed for lacquered wood.

That’s a very good start. The HEMNES series is made from solid pine wood, which is typically finished with either a lacquer or an oil treatment. It is important to avoid exposing the furniture to excessive water, as the wood can swell and become damaged.

I recommend the following maintenance routine:

- Regularly dust with a soft, dry cloth or a duster
- For cleaning, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth, but as mentioned, dry immediately afterward
- Avoid using harsh cleaning agents, as these can damage or dull the finish
- Occasionally apply special furniture wax or oil treatments designed for lacquered pine wood to protect the surface and enhance the color

Minor scratches or dents can often be repaired well using fine sandpaper followed by an appropriate furniture oil. If you like, I can also provide recommendations on suitable care products. What finish does your HEMNES furniture have exactly? Lacquered, waxed, or oiled?

This is actually a crucial point! Most HEMNES pieces have a matte paint or a thin lacquer coating, which gives them a nicely matte appearance while also being durable. Therefore, the care should be adjusted accordingly:

- For painted surfaces, a damp microfiber cloth is usually sufficient. Avoid using pure oils.
- Oiled pieces should be maintained with special furniture oils that nourish the wood.
- Waxes are rarely recommended for this furniture, as they can dissolve the lacquer layer.

I also recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to heat sources and direct sunlight. This helps prevent discoloration and cracking. Maintaining a consistent indoor climate with moderate humidity is also beneficial.

If you want, I can also provide tips on how to treat small stains or how to handle stains from red wine or coffee.
