Hello,

My name is Horst, and I am new to this forum. Thank you for having me!

I need your advice:

One of the light wells at my house is cracked and needs to be replaced.

In the next few days, I will expose the well using a mini excavator.

When installing the new well, I plan to proceed as follows:

- Approximately 10 cm (4 inches) layer of crushed stone
- Apply bitumen to the masonry
- Attach an insulation mat to the masonry
- Install the light well
- Backfill all around with crushed stone or gravel up to the top edge of the well

What grain size should the crushed stone and gravel have?

Do the crushed stone and gravel need to be compacted?

If so, with what?

Which type of insulation mat should I use?

I assume there is a drainage system installed around the house, but I am not completely sure.

Thanks for your input and greetings from Westerwald

Backfill with cellular concrete and compact carefully in layers.

I assume sand would also work, but that was our case.
