ᐅ What should I consider when choosing a Billy bookcase for the office?

Hello everyone, I am planning to buy a Billy bookcase from Ikea for my office, but I am unsure about what to consider when choosing the right one. It’s not just about the appearance or price, but also factors such as load capacity, dimensions, possible compatible extensions, and of course, stability. Are there any special considerations for assembly or material choice (color, finish) that are particularly important for everyday office use? I work a lot with binders and books and thought the Billy bookcase would be ideal for that. Maybe you also have tips on what to specifically watch out for with Billy compared to other shelving systems? Looking forward to your expertise!

Thank you for your previous tips and experiences. I have one more question about the dimensions: What are the standard measurements for Billy? Are the dimensions of the standard shelves exactly suitable for common binders? And how deep is the version that is best suited for an office? I measured, and a depth of about 40 cm (16 inches) would be possible, maybe also 28 cm (11 inches). Are there any restrictions or recommendations regarding this?

Regarding extensions: Which additions have you found particularly useful in an office setting? Height extensions or doors sound interesting, but I am wondering if they are worth it.

The standard Billy shelves usually come in two depths: 28 cm (11 inches) and 40 cm (16 inches). The 40 cm (16 inches) depth is better suited for file binders, as a binder is typically about 32 cm (13 inches) wide. Doors are less practical for an office if you need quick access to the binders.

I think glass doors look really nice if you want to present your stuff in a tidier way 🙂 They also help keep dust out. Add-on shelves are great if you need a lot of vertical storage and want to make use of the wall height. Even if it doesn’t seem very exciting at first, it will definitely save you a lot of space. And remember to use small casters if you might want to move the shelf later!

I completely agree. I have the 40 cm (16 inches) Billy shelf in my office myself, and it fits the folder size perfectly. Another essential tip for me: always use the supplied wall brackets and check the wall type before installation; this saves back pain and hassle. I don’t use doors since I often need direct access to the documents.

I can understand that, although I prefer open access in the office. However, what I consider very important—and hasn’t been mentioned here yet—is that floors should not be overloaded. I have seen shelves in offices that were literally “overloaded,” and no wall mounting could help at that point. It’s better to plan with some reserve capacity.
