Hello everyone, I have a question that I haven’t been able to find a satisfying answer to so far: What effects do wood oils have on Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially on the wood and surface quality?
I plan to oil a HEMNES sideboard and want to know whether wood oils enhance or rather change the typical texture and appearance of the solid pine furniture, how well the oils protect the wood, for example against moisture or scratches, and if there are different results depending on the type of oil used.
Are there any experiences regarding which oils are particularly suitable and how often the treatment should be reapplied? I would also be interested to know whether the oil lightens or deepens the wood color, or if there is a risk of darkening over time. I would appreciate your tips and experiences.

Huge topic! I just treated my Hemnes bed chest with a wax oil and I’m really impressed: the surface now feels much smoother and the wood looks much more vibrant, really nice and warm.
Of course, applying the oil takes a bit of effort, but it’s definitely worth it! Also, it feels good to know that the furniture is better protected against scratches and water stains. My advice: after the first treatment, be sure to keep an eye on it for a few weeks, especially in humid conditions, and reapply if needed. This way, the wood stays in great condition.
Have you tried different oils before? I’m curious if others have had the same experiences with HEMNES furniture using other oils.

Linseed Oil vs. Hardwax OilI would like to add that when choosing linseed oil, it is important whether it is cold-pressed and unbleached, as only these versions preserve the wood’s natural structure without harmful additives. Pine, as a softwood, benefits from a deeply penetrating oil that not only protects but also enhances the wood’s appearance.
Hardwax oil, on the other hand, creates a thin but durable surface. However, potential follow-up treatments should be considered to maintain long-lasting protection.
Back to the topic: wood oils influence the look of HEMNES furniture not only by deepening the color but also offer mechanical protection depending on the product, as well as the possibility to care for the wood without sealing it.
I am curious if anyone has experience with homemade blends or special natural oils. Can the tactile effect be adjusted this way?

I want to preserve the natural look and feel as much as possible, so some kind of surface protection that allows the wood to breathe.A hardwax oil is well suited for this, as it leaves a thin protective layer that remains breathable, allowing moisture to escape.

For HEMNES furniture made of pine, I recommend hardwax oil because it enhances protection and keeps the surface quality more stable. These statements are correct. I also recommend making sure the oil is specifically suitable for pine wood and does not contain solvents or plastics, as these could unnecessarily seal the porous structure of HEMNES furniture.
When applying, it is crucial to spread the oil evenly and sparingly, otherwise the wood may darken unevenly. It is also important to maintain the surface afterward to keep it in good condition over the long term.
For an even more natural finish, you can lightly sand the wood with fine steel wool before oiling; this helps achieve a particularly attractive surface.
