Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA Billy shelves: after moving them several times and regular use, some of the screw holes in the side panels have torn out. This causes the shelves or back panels to no longer hold properly, making everything quite wobbly.

I am interested in possible ways to effectively repair or reinforce these torn screw holes. It is important that the solution is as durable and stable as possible, since otherwise the shelves are hardly usable. Does anyone have tips on suitable materials, repair methods, or special tools that can make the screw holes functional again?

Thank you in advance for your help!

If the screw holes are stripped, using wood glue and wooden dowels often helps. Slightly enlarge the holes, glue in the dowels, and let them dry. After that, you can securely screw in again.

Exactly, you could even start with a cheeky 'mini operation on the Billy shelf' 😉.

One more tip: If you cut the dowels carefully to fit, it provides extra stability. After that, it’s best to use a precise screwdriver (preferably not a power drill and with a delicate touch). This way, we avoid further damage and don’t burn marks into the shelf.

As a supplement: When repairing stripped screw holes in Billy shelves, it is helpful to first accurately measure the diameter of the damaged hole. Then, hardwood wooden dowels with the corresponding diameter can be inserted into the enlarged hole.

The procedure is as follows:
1. Carefully drill out the damaged hole so that the dowel fits tightly.
2. Insert matching wooden dowels into the holes and glue them firmly.
3. After sufficient drying time, screw in new screws.

Using a high-quality wood glue significantly improves adhesion. It is also recommended to screw in the screws without applying excessive force to prevent further stripping.

Another practical option for damaged screw holes is to use wood filler or a repair compound specifically designed for wood.

After drilling out the hole, fill it with the repair filler, sand it smooth, and once fully cured, use smaller wood screws.

This method is especially suitable if the material around the hole is not completely drilled through but only damaged. Filling is more cost-effective and requires less effort than using dowels.

This works, but it is less stable than wooden dowels. If the shelf will bear heavy loads, it is better to use dowels.
