Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Our Philips vacuum cleaner was used today at my mother-in-law’s place.
We were quite shocked by the amount of dirty water collected. 25 years of scrubbing and wiping by hand were washed away mercilessly in no time. The result speaks for itself.
I’m curious to hear what you think of it, Sylvia.

So, I always considered myself a tidy person who regularly cleans the floors...

But today, the Philips Aquario arrived.
We have only lived in the house for 3 years!
The brown bathroom tiles look like they were just installed after cleaning. You can clearly see the lighter pattern in the dark brown, just like on the first day.
I don’t even want to talk about the color of the dirty water.

Initial impression:

It’s definitely not faster than using a mop. It makes sense to first clean the edges with a scrubber about 5 cm (2 inches) wide, then use the device on the rest of the floor. But the cleanliness—well...
The device also requires some maintenance.

I live with someone very critical. “If this thing isn’t any good or is as much of a maintenance hassle as the VR200 → send it back immediately!” was the instruction.
That person is now busy using it in the tiled basement workshop and has already assigned it a permanent spot. The kitchen has also been cleaned without asking.

Well, surprising.

In a few weeks, I’ll probably report back on the long-term test for the 230 sqm (2,475 sq ft) area.

Many thanks for the tip, Eve.

This is about robots, not manual handheld vacuum cleaners, or did I miss something?

Is there a good robot mop available?

The discussion has broadened over the past few weeks. However, I recently saw a video on QVC presenting a mopping robot. I’m not convinced, as it uses a cloth that apparently cannot be properly saturated, and the cloth needs to be changed frequently.

@silvia: I’m glad my tip is being well received.

And I searched everywhere for this supposedly brilliant robot vacuum cleaner.

Please do not call the device a robot.
