Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Yes, the suction mop is a great tool.

You clamp a damp cleaning cloth in the center, suction is applied in front of and behind the cloth, and the cloth vibrates back and forth in the middle, effectively cleaning the floor.

There are different cloths for various floor types and a dosing aid to control the amount of water and cleaning solution used.

Best regards,

Since I got the robot vacuum, I only vacuum manually occasionally, just for hard-to-reach spots (e.g., behind the PC, in corners behind the seating area, etc., where the robot can’t reach and dust accumulates). Before, due to the cats, I used to vacuum every 1-2 days.

Since our Wall-E moved in, I vacuum at most once a week upstairs to clean the hard-to-reach corners.
Before, we had to vacuum daily because we have a long-haired cat.

The robot vacuum runs daily in our home.

With daily use of a vacuum cleaner so far, I can definitely understand the investment.

In our case, despite having a long-haired cat, we usually only vacuum on weekends, unless the cat is going through a heavy shedding phase. Somehow, I don’t yet see the time-to-benefit ratio justifying an investment of €600-800 (approximately $650-$870), especially since the hard-to-reach corners still need to be cleaned regularly, meaning we cannot do without a regular vacuum cleaner. Additionally, the cat is not allowed in certain rooms, which is hard to enforce with open doors.

I find the topic very interesting, but somehow it’s not quite worthwhile for us yet. Maybe the good devices will become more affordable over time, making it worth it eventually.

This is definitely a very personal decision when it comes to a device in this price range.
In our case, all rooms on the ground floor and upper floor, except for the guest bathroom on the ground floor, are open and accessible—and the cats are allowed in those areas. Regarding the cats, I think it’s less about hair length and more about how much they shed (I would guess that long hair takes longer to regrow and might shed less frequently?). Our two only need to play together once, and they get so energetic that huge amounts of hair “fall out.” It’s true that when we vacuum less often, the amount of hair becomes very noticeable. No matter where something falls, there will be lots of hair attached.
We also have two small children. All in all, we probably save about 3 hours per week (especially—try vacuuming while a two-year-old “helps” by hanging on the vacuum handle). On the other hand, the robot vacuum has been running for 4 years already (previously in our apartment), so over the years that adds up to quite a few hours. Ultimately, everyone has to decide for themselves how much their time is worth.
