ᐅ Utility Room on the Upper Floor – Issues with Noise?

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, I don’t have a floor plan to share yet. But we are currently considering whether to include a utility room on the upper floor or not.
In the utility room, we would install a washing machine, dryer, and a sink.
We are planning two children’s bedrooms, which would both be adjacent to the utility room. One of the bedrooms would be used from move-in — our child is now 1.5 years old. Another child is planned.
The architect told us that he doesn’t think one of the children could sleep while the washing machine or dryer is running because they are simply too loud.
Additionally, vibrations and noise would carry through the ceiling.
Now we are uncertain…
Who of you has a utility room on the upper floor?
How is the noise from the washing machine and dryer? Have you had any problems?
What measures have you taken to solve or reduce this issue?

Best regards

We also have the room upstairs, but "behind" the bathroom. You can notice when a machine is running, but it’s not disturbing.

Children up to about 10-12 years old aren’t bothered by noise anyway. And for older ones, you could even be considerate and avoid running the washing machine in the middle of the night if necessary.

However, if this is important for you, the architect should consider thicker walls and soundproof doors for the utility room.

Not having a floor plan yet is actually a good thing because it allows you to avoid the common mistake of designing the upper floor only after the ground floor.
Regarding the washing machine and dryer, I can assure you that you won’t hear any noise from those either from the neighboring apartment or from the one above.

We are planning two children’s bedrooms, both located directly next to the utility room. One of the kids’ rooms would be used from move-in—our child is currently 1.5 years old. Another child is planned.

A soundproof door is a great option. It only cost about €200 (around $215) extra. Definitely worth considering.

In our new build, we also placed the utility room on the upper floor, between the bathroom and the children's bedroom. The washing machine and dryer are installed elevated inside a cabinet.

Nowadays, the appliances are getting quieter, and most have a delayed start option, so you can schedule the washing when the child is not sleeping, in case they are very sensitive to noise.

But we could also be banging around with drums and trumpets in the house—our daughter seems totally unaffected 😀

Edit: I’ll be able to provide a real experience report around mid to late June 😉

Thank you all – this already helps me a lot 🙂.

We had already planned a soundproof door and possibly additional sound insulation for the adjacent interior walls.
How large is your utility room on the upper floor respectively? And how large is your technical room on the ground floor in comparison?
One of the considerations was to possibly make the technical room on the ground floor smaller by moving the utility room upstairs.

We already discussed this topic last night here: https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/minimale-Grundfläche-Hauswirtschaftsraum-und-az-im-eg-ohne-keller.42611/page-2#post-576382 – or, like @Golfi90, you can place the service room upstairs: https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/gedaemmten-technikraum-fuer-die-gastherme-auf-dem-dachboden-schaffe.32450/
