ᐅ Utility Room on the Upper Floor – Issues with Noise?

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, I don’t have a floor plan to share yet. But we are currently considering whether to include a utility room on the upper floor or not.
In the utility room, we would install a washing machine, dryer, and a sink.
We are planning two children’s bedrooms, which would both be adjacent to the utility room. One of the bedrooms would be used from move-in — our child is now 1.5 years old. Another child is planned.
The architect told us that he doesn’t think one of the children could sleep while the washing machine or dryer is running because they are simply too loud.
Additionally, vibrations and noise would carry through the ceiling.
Now we are uncertain…
Who of you has a utility room on the upper floor?
How is the noise from the washing machine and dryer? Have you had any problems?
What measures have you taken to solve or reduce this issue?

Best regards

Very nice – thank you. That really looks sufficient 🙂

...and based on the example shown in the pictures, I would personally add more shelves on the right wall where the vacuum cleaner is currently hanging. That way, it would be possible to store significantly more while still keeping a sufficiently wide passage.

Here is a storage area under a straight staircase, used as a cloakroom (side door). See attachments!

The cloakroom for 2! people under the stairs!

Primer, pine wood (before it nearly ran out), simple shelf rails, clothes rail, and wood stain for the boards from a total of 3 hardware stores (during the pandemic), high-quality leftover paint, a Faktum cabinet, and IKEA cubes from existing stock. 2 days of work and now a lot of enjoyment. The right wall still has potential... IKEA currently charges €39 for delivery, so some things will have to wait.
Summary: from about 28 spaces for pairs of shoes now... I can hardly count them 😀, anyway enough, and room for empty bags in the corner... judge for yourself: (everything is straight, the tilt comes from the panoramic shot 🙂

Is the gap between the stairs and the boxed-in area difficult to clean?

No… it’s actually quite manageable. You just have to remove the vacuum cleaner nozzle.
