Hello everyone,
Unfortunately, I don’t have a floor plan to share yet. But we are currently considering whether to include a utility room on the upper floor or not.
In the utility room, we would install a washing machine, dryer, and a sink.
We are planning two children’s bedrooms, which would both be adjacent to the utility room. One of the bedrooms would be used from move-in — our child is now 1.5 years old. Another child is planned.
The architect told us that he doesn’t think one of the children could sleep while the washing machine or dryer is running because they are simply too loud.
Additionally, vibrations and noise would carry through the ceiling.
Now we are uncertain…
Who of you has a utility room on the upper floor?
How is the noise from the washing machine and dryer? Have you had any problems?
What measures have you taken to solve or reduce this issue?
Best regards

How large is your utility room on the upper floor respectively? And how large is your technical room on the ground floor in return? My utility room on the upper floor is about 3sqm (32sqft) ;-)
It is used exclusively for stacked white goods, a laundry hamper, and a shelf for detergents and towels.

goalkeeper19 May 2022 12:26So… we have a terraced house without a basement, so we installed all our technical equipment in the attic—right next to the bathroom and bedroom—to avoid having a utility room on the ground floor. We have a pantry under the stairs that stores everything necessary.
In the attic, there is the heat pump, controlled ventilation system, as well as the dryer and washing machine. My wife likes to start a wash or dryer cycle before going to bed. You can sleep peacefully—also thanks to the soundproof door and the fully insulated door frame. In the bathroom, you can occasionally hear the washing machine when water is being drawn, since the pipe runs directly inside the wall.
Otherwise, with proper planning these days, it works very well.

It’s used exclusively for stacked white goods, a laundry bin, and a shelf for detergents and towels. Ours upstairs is 4 sqm (43 sq ft) and, in addition to @lastdrop’s setup (the appliances stand side by side with a width of 1.30 m (4 ft 3 in)), there is a drying rack on the wall for delicate laundry and a door to the crawl space.
On the ground floor are the technical installations and the rest, totaling 8.5 sqm (92 sq ft). We are two people.
We have the washing machine and dryer in the basement, but I would like to point out that besides potential noise (for example, I often do laundry early in the morning when the family is still sleeping), the almost hourly trips to load, unload, and transfer clothes to the dryer are much more frequent on big laundry days than simply carrying laundry once from the upper floor or ground floor down. My preference today would be to have the utility room (well soundproofed) on the ground floor, where I spend most of my time—so purely for convenience reasons :-)
Our washing machine and dryer are separated from the living room and bedroom only by drywall. Our one-year-old son sleeps in a crib next to us, and even the spin cycle does not bother him. Apart from the spinning, we can only hear the beeping when a cycle has finished. However, I made sure to buy quiet appliances (direct drive).
