ᐅ Using Billy Regal Accessories with Other Furniture Series – Are They Compatible?

rudy-draHello everyone, I am currently looking into the question: Is it possible to use Billy shelf accessories, such as shelves, drawer inserts, or storage elements, with furniture series from other manufacturers or other IKEA series? I am particularly interested in whether the dimensions and fastening systems of Billy accessories are compatible with those from other furniture lines, allowing for more flexibility without necessarily having to purchase the original Billy accessories. Does anyone have practical experience or details regarding measurements and mounting methods that facilitate or prevent this?

Hello rudy-dra,
I recommend keeping the following in mind: The Billy shelf uses shelves about 16 mm (0.6 inches) thick and holes for wooden dowels and metal pins spaced at 32 mm (1.26 inches), which is a common grid measurement. However, the side panels are often specifically designed in material and thickness for Billy. Accessories from other series might fit visually, but load capacity or exact fit can often be an issue.
A small tip: If you want to combine accessories from series like Kallax or Hemnes with Billy, please first carefully check whether the depth measurements match (Billy is usually 28 cm (11 inches) deep), otherwise the shelf might tip over or the mounting may have too much play.
In summary: The combination is possible, but only with additional adjustments or, as I often do, with small helpers like screws or wooden battens to ensure a secure and form-fitting assembly.
If you are interested in drawer inserts, you should always use the original Billy rails or systems because the holes are specially designed.

Do other series have different depths and how noticeable is this in practice?

they usually don’t fit perfectlyWould it be a viable solution here to make custom holes yourself, or does that typically reduce stability? I’m not looking for a solution that requires improvisation afterwards; it should remain as stable and functional as possible.
Hello rudy-dra,
very good question! I would like to add: Other series often have different depths, such as Kallax with about 39 cm (15 inches) depth or the Malm series with varying dimensions. These differences cannot be easily bridged.
Re-drilling is possible, but you should pay close attention to alignment to maintain stability and to avoid drawers or shelves becoming loose or sagging. Another point is that the material of Billy is usually thinner particleboard with a melamine coating, which can lose stability after too many drillings.
An alternative I often recommend is using universal shelves that can be mounted in the unit with suitable brackets. This way, you can at least partially integrate accessories from other series and ensure stable fixing with your own brackets.
In summary: Yes, modifications are possible, but they require careful work and sometimes minor compromises in appearance or stability.

Hey everyone! I find this topic really exciting 🙂 Recently, I tried combining Billy shelves with adjustable shelves from the Pax series myself. It actually works if you get a bit creative and don’t try to match everything exactly. The Pax shelves are thicker and sometimes pre-drilled differently, but with small clamps or suitable brackets, they hold firmly. That’s great because it gives you much more flexibility when furnishing!
It’s important to remember not to overload the shelves – they are sometimes designed for different load cases. I recommend anyone who wants to try this to test with small items first before putting heavier things on. Have fun experimenting! 🙂
