Hello,

which type of windows have you chosen for your houses?

Single casement? Double casement?
What widths and heights?
Double casement with or without a mullion?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of these windows?

Our house will be an urban villa with external dimensions of 10.72 x 8.62 meters (35.2 x 28.3 feet). Which windows would you recommend for that? From an aesthetic point of view, we prefer double casement windows. But what is more practical?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

P.S. Attached are two pictures, showing two different options.

Single-leaf = 120x120 cm (47x47 inches)
Double-leaf = 151x138 cm (59x54 inches)

We have a townhouse with similar dimensions (8 x 10.5 meters) (26 x 34 feet). On the south side, we installed two double casement windows both upstairs and downstairs, with a fixed lower window chosen for the upstairs.

Advantage of the divided upper floor-to-ceiling window: you don’t need a grille in front of it, which can sometimes look unattractive.
Disadvantage: you can only tilt the upper window a small amount for ventilation, and to clean the lower window from the outside, you either have to lean over from the front or access it from below.

Because of the ventilation system, we hardly ever open the windows anyway. The children’s room also has another window, as you can see.

With a townhouse, it is very important that the window placement looks symmetrical from the outside. Otherwise, it quickly looks quite odd. It’s best to visit new housing developments and look at townhouses. From my current window, I can see two townhouses that were clearly badly planned.

The areas where the front door is shown have been edited to remove the construction companies’ advertising banners. Unfortunately, I don’t have a better front photo with the installed front door.

It’s purely a matter of personal taste. Especially with an urban villa, you have all options open.

Discuss this with your architect. Depending on the location of the house, they will recommend window fronts.

Floor-to-ceiling windows with a fixed lower window appeal to me. However, I decided against them because, as you mentioned, cleaning these windows is somewhat complicated.

What are the dimensions of your windows?

With a townhouse, you basically have all options open. However, you do need to bring the design to a coherent conclusion. A random mix is definitely not a good idea. For example, having one double door next to a floor-to-ceiling window, then above that another floor-to-ceiling window next to a regular window would almost certainly look very bad.

Depending on who ultimately builds the house, you should review floor plans and side elevations. In the end, you have to decide for yourself, and these floor plans are really helpful. Especially with a townhouse, there isn’t much room for creative experimentation. The ground floor usually consists, to the right and left of the entrance, of a utility room plus a toilet. On the other side, there might be a room and the start of the kitchen, and at the back, a hallway facing south leading to the living room (in some cases, part of the living room and kitchen may be swapped, for plots with a west-facing entrance). The staircase is generally located somewhere in the middle of the house, with the bedrooms distributed upstairs in a classic layout. Of course, other arrangements are possible, but 10 out of 10 townhouses visited in this area follow this pattern.
