Hi Forum,

Our toilet cistern constantly keeps running water. Sometimes it doesn’t stop at all, and then we have to hit the tiles to get it to stop.
The cistern is built into the wall, and everything in front of it is tiled.
Is there any way to fix this from the outside if we hire a professional, or does the whole wall have to be opened up to access the cistern?
That would be disastrous because we don’t have any spare tiles left.

This is also an unfortunate solution, and only the craftsman can help here. Of course, that will also cost money. I am also curious to see how the craftsman solved the problem. These are indeed significant water costs.

Of course, you can also try to manage on your own, as installing a new float valve or a seal is definitely something you can do alone—I, as a woman, even feel confident about that 🙂

It gets more difficult when you really have to remove the tiles because you forgot to leave an access panel. In that case, if the work is being done, I would suggest installing an access panel 🙂

Good evening,

We had a craftsman come by who did a very good job.
He carefully cut into the grout lines of the tiles and gently removed them from the wall.
That way, he was able to reach the concealed cistern, where new technology (the lever mechanism inside) was installed.
On the back of the tiles, some of the old plaster was also carefully removed, and after taking away a bit of the wall, the tiles were cleanly reattached.
For the grout lines, he mixed the color, so now you can hardly see any difference.
It took quite a long time, but the cost was less than we expected or than if we had had the entire wall retiled with new tiles.
All’s well that ends well.

Hi Senni,
I’m really glad to hear that everything worked out so well in the end. Even if we are somewhat handy, a professional is definitely the best solution.
