Hi Forum,
Our toilet cistern constantly keeps running water. Sometimes it doesn’t stop at all, and then we have to hit the tiles to get it to stop.
The cistern is built into the wall, and everything in front of it is tiled.
Is there any way to fix this from the outside if we hire a professional, or does the whole wall have to be opened up to access the cistern?
That would be disastrous because we don’t have any spare tiles left.

It depends on how the cistern was installed.
Sometimes, depending on the construction type, you can access it by removing the plastic cover where you press to flush.
But whether that’s enough to check if a seal is damaged or if any part of the mechanism has come loose is uncertain.
Only a professional tradesperson will likely be able to provide a definitive answer if you or your team can’t do it yourselves.

Thank you, Hans, even though this isn’t what I wanted to hear.
We’ve already taken the cover off before, but there’s nothing visible.
We’ll probably have to hire a professional, which we had already considered.
Maybe we can still find the same tiles somewhere, because a few tiles will definitely break if the whole wall has to be opened up.
If we can’t find the same tiles, that wall will probably have to be tiled differently.
Maybe it will even turn into a nice renovation.
Always look on the bright side 🙂

Hi Seni, how did you manage that?
We had already removed the lid once, but you can’t really see anything further.
I think there are tiles in front of it 🙂
Usually, there is a tile panel that can be removed, allowing easy access to the toilet cistern. From what it sounds like, the float valve is either leaking or clogged.

Hello Henry,
The plastic panel is just loosely pressed on and can be removed easily.
I’m familiar with the kind of flap you find on bathtubs, where the drain and so on are visible. However, there isn’t such a flap on the flush tank. I don’t know why we didn’t pay attention to that back then, but we had a lot going on at the time.
I called a tradesperson yesterday who will come at the end of the week. Then I’ll know more.

Angelia-14 Feb 2014 15:54And it can get expensive if you have to remove the tiles. I’m curious to hear what the contractor will say about that.
