ᐅ Exterior wall is crumbling—should I be concerned?

Hello dear forum,

I am new here and have a question for you! We are currently building a house and the foundation slab is already in place.

Our land has a slight slope, so there is an earth wall on one side of the property. Of course, there will be a retaining wall built there later. But now I am worried because some soil is breaking away. Is this normal? The wall is about 1.4 meters (4.6 feet) high and 15 meters (49 feet) wide.

Is it possible to build such a wall yourself, or is it better to hire a professional? It is not a retaining wall.

Best regards,
Silent802

Why is until 2020 too long?

Because it then slipped too much, possibly all the way to the house wall.
Our fastening with planter rings was actually born out of budget constraints. One pot at 1.40 net was unbeatable in price. Only now, with everything planted and green, it really looks good. My wife has many roses up top and so on, in the middle ground-covering plants that overgrow the pots, and at the bottom we filled with screed concrete and covered with pebbles. The whole thing now looks harmonious; unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of the current state at hand. I think our budget compromise turned out to be quite good after all. Karsten

Sorry, but it’s logical that it’s crumbling. Did you expect the edge to stay vertical for 1.5 years?

I’m not sure if it will reach the house wall. Your house wall will definitely be exposed to rain, wind, and so on in 2020. I would have this finished now, ideally before the exterior plastering.

Yes, that’s clear. I wanted to start with the splash guard and the pathways next year.

Landscape gardeners also won’t be available immediately but mostly from 2020.

So, either build the wall myself or wait.

My groundworks contractor advised me to do it in 2020 because the terrain is still settling and the planning isn’t finalized yet.

I’m open to all suggestions.

What does a rubble stone wall about 15 meters by 1.40 m (46 feet by 4.6 feet) high roughly cost?

Thanks to everyone for the great posts.

You will have to have it dug out again anyway after a few snowfalls and rain showers. But you should protect the house wall. We had geotextile fabric stretched over the ground for months. Still, the house wall suffered damage—more than I expected.

Try googling "sheet pile wall"; maybe it will inspire you to find a solution.
