Happy weekend to everyone!

I want to reinforce the driveway to my single-family house. This will be professionally done as part of a future extension, for example by paving, but that won’t be possible for another 4-5 years.

Until then, I would like to do a temporary job myself. The house is located on a hill, and the driveway is supposed to split halfway, reaching both the front and rear parts of the property.

Currently, part of the driveway is minimally reinforced, almost like a dirt road, and the other part is just grass.

My plan: completely mow the area, till the ground to a depth of about 15cm (6 inches), have a truck deliver crushed stone, spread it out, compact it with a vibrating plate compactor, bring a second load of crushed stone, and compact it again.

The total length is about 70 x 2.5m (230 x 8 feet), so quite a stretch. Thanks for your opinions.

Best regards,
Michael

Ask the paver or landscape gardener how they would prefer to proceed to avoid having to excavate everything again.

Will the paved path be used for a Bobby car, car, van, or a 10-ton (10,000 kg) truck? An extension sounds like a construction road for 40 tons (40,000 kg) possibly.

If you only excavate 15cm (6 inches) now and do it properly in a few years, you'll have the problem of soil mixed with cellular concrete.

Do the substructure correctly from the start. And the paving, when you have the budget.

I figured that if gravel / crushed stone works well and is compacted once a year, it could stay like that for now. Since a lot of money is already going into the construction, I would prefer to postpone the 250m² (2700 sq ft) paving if possible...

Is there no construction road leading to your house, or will one still be built?

You mean at the municipal level? But there is a road, and my project concerns everything on my property beyond the road. As I said, the house is located quite a distance away.
