Happy weekend to everyone!

I want to reinforce the driveway to my single-family house. This will be professionally done as part of a future extension, for example by paving, but that won’t be possible for another 4-5 years.

Until then, I would like to do a temporary job myself. The house is located on a hill, and the driveway is supposed to split halfway, reaching both the front and rear parts of the property.

Currently, part of the driveway is minimally reinforced, almost like a dirt road, and the other part is just grass.

My plan: completely mow the area, till the ground to a depth of about 15cm (6 inches), have a truck deliver crushed stone, spread it out, compact it with a vibrating plate compactor, bring a second load of crushed stone, and compact it again.

The total length is about 70 x 2.5m (230 x 8 feet), so quite a stretch. Thanks for your opinions.

Best regards,
Michael

Regarding the extension, it will still take 4-5 years. It simply doesn’t make sense to start earlier since the plan is not finalized yet. In the end, a significant part of the paving would have to be removed again...

Milling alone is not enough, at least for the lawn. You won’t want to pave over it later with that base...

Crushed stone might be nicer for the meantime, but for a later base under paving, gravel is better.

However, bringing dirt into the house for 4-5 years isn’t everyone’s preference... The postman and cyclists won’t like it either.

Then leave it as it is,
walk and drive on the dirt road to the house,
or create a footpath by laying paving slabs on the lawn, so the lawn mower can pass over them and you can enter the house with dry feet.
