We want to pave our driveway. It’s easily over 100m² (1,076 sq ft). We have quotes around 6,500€. Now I'm really feeling a bit stingy and wondering if it’s something we can do ourselves? It’s not exactly rocket science, right? Has anyone here done their own paving? Is it possible for a layperson to handle 100m² (1,076 sq ft) on their own?

Keep in mind that you will need more than that. Crushed stone is more efficient when compacted.

I’m jumping in here as well. We also have about 140 square meters (1500 square feet) to pave and are still undecided whether to do it ourselves with the help of a friend who is a professional paver, or just hire the pros directly and assist them as laborers.

Preparatory work: granite stones still need to be installed to border a planting strip, we want to add a paver-compatible cover for the inspection shaft, and we still need to agree on the type of paving to use.

Originally, we planned to use Centara by Kann, but we’ve now heard from various sources about problems with stones breaking apart. What would be the downside of using stones in the size 30 x 60 cm (12 x 24 inches)?

The larger the stones, the more stable the substructure needs to be. If the stones are not laid flat, they may wobble and break.

That again speaks more in favor of professionals...

Since last summer, we have already installed the substructure made of mineral concrete. The plan was to simply add gravel on top, level it, and then pave.

The joint needs to be straight. So, make sure to level it very carefully.

I have a quick question. I applied and compacted a 20cm (8 inch) base layer. Unfortunately, there are many indentations on the surface of the base layer. If the gravel is now applied with varying thicknesses (2cm–4cm) (1–1.5 inches), will this affect the compaction of the paving?
