Hello,
First of all, we consciously decided against a full smart home system but would like to be able to control some of our electric roller shutters via smartphone or voice commands. (It was a cost issue, and our general contractor didn’t really have the expertise for it.) I came across the Shelly 2.5 devices.
Are they recommended? Are there better alternatives in the same price range?
Is there anything to consider with traditionally wired roller shutters that have switches at the room entrance? Since our shell construction is still in progress, we could still take some things into account if necessary.
Thanks for any information.

The Shellys work well and are almost unmatched in this very low price range.

I would recommend using push buttons instead of switches. They are simply easier to operate since the toggles won’t constantly be positioned unevenly. However, you should have them installed right away because without Shellys, you can’t operate the roller shutters with push buttons. Shellys also work with switches, though.

Make sure you have deep enough electrical boxes to fit the wiring properly.

I have just installed it the same way in my place.

However, I can tell you that even with deep flush-mounted boxes, it’s not an easy task! At least as an electrical novice, I wasn’t aware of how much wiring is actually inside one of these boxes. It’s a frustrating and fiddly job. It can be done, but you need to be prepared for it. I spent about 15 to 30 minutes on each of the first 4 Shelly devices.

You have already been advised against using deep flush-mounted boxes. However, I don’t quite understand the recommendation to use push buttons instead of switches. With switches, you remain flexible and can control the roller shutters both via smartphone, as mentioned here, and manually at any time.

But switches block each other or remain stuck in the down position. Push buttons do not have this issue. That’s why push buttons are used with Shelly. The same thing happens: activation via push button/switch as well as through the app.

The same thing happens, whether you operate the push button/switch or the app.

Nothing gets blocked here. Since the switches only send signals to the Shelly device, there is no locking mechanism involved. Example: The switch for down latches -> the shutter moves down until it hits the limit -> then in the app you command "up" -> the shutter moves up as far as you want -> if you want to operate the switch again now, you first have to toggle off the "down" command, and then you can use it normally.
You don’t lose anything at all and even gain the option to fully lower the shutter without it getting stuck.

Edit: We have 2 switches per shutter. Unfortunately, I don’t know how it works with a rocker switch.
