I have a fairly specific question that I’ve been thinking about for a while: Is it actually possible to retrofit doors onto a Billy bookshelf?
I have a few older Billy bookshelves at home without doors, but I’d like to make them a bit more closed off since the shelf is located in an area that often looks a bit cluttered. I’m not looking to replace the entire unit, but rather a practical retrofit solution—such as special doors that can be screwed on or aftermarket folding doors.
I haven’t found many direct references online, but maybe someone here has more experience. Are these doors standardized, meaning can you simply buy and install them? Or do you have to modify the shelf in some way, which might be complicated or not recommended?
I would appreciate any tips, experiences, or even specific sources to purchase from. Thanks!

Is it actually possible to retrofit doors for a Billy bookshelf?Yes, in principle it is possible to retrofit doors for the Billy bookshelf. IKEA also offers doors designed specifically to fit the standard dimensions of Billy shelves. Installation is generally manageable for users with basic DIY skills and typically requires only simple tools like a screwdriver.
However, keep in mind that doors may not fit perfectly on older models if there have been modifications to the bookshelf series. There are also different types of doors available (e.g., solid doors or glass doors) with various mounting systems.
It gets more difficult with wider or very specialized versions of the Billy shelf. Usually, the bookshelf cannot be easily altered because the hinges are screwed directly into the wood. If the shelf is already in use, it’s best to retrofit the doors before it is fully stocked to avoid damage and the need for readjustment.
I recommend checking the exact measurements of your bookshelf and then specifically looking for Billy doors at the IKEA store or from accessory suppliers. Alternatively, there are third-party providers that offer retrofit kits.

Some time ago, I had a Billy bookcase without doors and just bought the matching doors later. The installation was actually easier than I expected! Just screw them on quickly, align them, and that’s it. It immediately gives a much tidier look!
And if you’re looking for a special style, there are even really cool options with glass or framed fronts that make the whole bookcase look very elegant!
So don’t worry, it works great and it’s a lot of fun to give your Billy bookcase a fresh new look! Good luck with it! 😉

Is it actually possible to retrofit doors for a Billy bookshelf? The question is valid and can be answered with a clear yes, but I want to add that the success of the retrofit strongly depends on the construction of the bookshelf.
Based on my experience, the following points should be considered:
1. Check dimensions: Standard Billy bookshelves come in widths of 40, 60, 80, or 106 cm (16, 24, 31.5, or 41.7 inches). The doors must match the width exactly; otherwise, there will be problems with installation and function.
2. Know the door types: IKEA offers simple solid wood doors as well as glass doors. For some models, there are also framed doors, which don’t fit every bookshelf version.
3. Attachment: Doors are usually mounted with hinges directly onto the bookshelf uprights. Minor modifications to the shelf are rarely necessary, but this can vary with older models or customized bookshelves.
4. Alternatives: If IKEA doors don’t fit, you can experiment with magnetic strips or decorative films, or adapt custom-made doors.
In summary, retrofitting works well if the bookshelf meets current standards. For special shapes or heavily modified shelves, it is often more difficult and may not be advisable.

The success of the retrofit largely depends on how the shelf is installed.I would like to add that you should not forget the fittings and hinges when retrofitting. IKEA provides the doors with matching screws and hinges that are designed for the shelf unit. If you use doors from third-party suppliers, be sure to check compatibility to avoid installation problems.
Additionally, I recommend paying close attention to precisely aligning the doors during assembly so they close evenly and do not stick. A spirit level, small wooden blocks as spacers, and a steady hand can be very helpful here.
If you are unsure, there are many video tutorials and step-by-step guides online that can make retrofitting Billy doors much easier.
If you have any questions about specific steps, I’m happy to help! :-) Good luck!

I did it myself and was surprised how quickly new doors can give a Billy bookcase a completely different look. The important thing is that the bookcase is in good condition – no warped sides – which makes the installation much easier.
A tip from me: it’s best to get the doors with the matching hinges from IKEA, as this saves a lot of hassle with adjustments. And if you feel like it, you can even paint or cover the doors to give your Billy bookcase even more personality.
Enjoy retrofitting! You’ll be surprised how versatile such a simple piece of furniture can be. 😊
