Hello,
we have realized that we do need an intercom system for our house after all. We thought we could manage without one for at least a year, but now it has become more urgent.
The range of options is huge, and I find it hard to get an overview.
Here is the current situation.
There is a doorbell button next to the door on the mailbox. There is a bell (the "gong") inside the house. And there is a doorbell transformer in the distribution box supplying 12 volts (I measured it myself).
Unfortunately, I cannot provide details about the wiring, but I assume it is a very simple doorbell circuit.
There are also three light switches: one directly next to the doorbell button outside, one inside the hallway, and another one a bit further away on the exterior wall. All three switches control two outdoor lights, presumably wired as a multi-way switch.
There is no door opener.
And that is basically the situation.
Now, looking ahead, I would like to keep the option open to upgrade to a "better" system later on.
For now, something simple will do. It just needs to have a speaker/microphone, doorbell button, and light switch integrated with the outdoor unit. I plan to install the intercom inside the dining room.
We don’t need a door opener right now, but we would like to prepare for that possibility in case we want to add one later.
At the location where the outdoor unit will be mounted, it should be no problem to run a power cable.
However, in the dining room, there is no power supply, and it will be difficult to run a power cable there (despite the timber frame construction).
I am also wondering how it is possible to combine the outdoor unit with the outdoor light switches (because I am not sure how the light switch setup can be integrated with the outdoor station).
Could you please help me understand what would be the best approach here?
Kind regards,
xola

Try searching the forum first; at least I have already started a thread where I compare different suppliers, mainly focusing on price.
The ones I selected were BuschJäger, GIRA, Ritto, and Siedle.
The manufacturers themselves provide good information over the phone, for example regarding your question about whether you can control the outdoor lighting. Generally, this is possible; they usually offer a light button that activates an outdoor lamp.
As an alternative to the intercom system, you can also connect the outdoor station to a home FritzBox router, and the household DECT phones will be called. Mobile devices also work.
It is probably not possible to install a fixed indoor station without power. If in-wall cables are not an option, consider routing cables behind the baseboard or in small channels under the ceiling. Alternatively, check if there is a 5-core cable somewhere, of which only three cores are needed. This way, the indoor station could possibly be powered. However, I definitely recommend the expertise of a qualified electrician to avoid any faulty work on the building.
