Hello,

unfortunately, we did not order this directly, so the electrical outlets in the children's rooms are standard sockets without additional protection. Before I apply these plastic covers, I wanted to check if it is possible to replace the socket insert instead?

I’m uncertain because I just read that it is not allowed to upgrade a standard socket to one with enhanced touch protection. Apparently, the "socket dimensions" must not be altered...?

Hello again,

A follow-up regarding my previously mentioned retrofit project (Busch-Jäger sockets):
Buying complete sockets—that is, the insert with electrical contacts including the covers with child safety shutters—was less expensive than buying only the covers with child safety shutters.
Since the insert was identical to those already installed in the walls, I only replaced the covers throughout the house (even above the kitchen cabinets).
This gives us peace of mind.

I disposed of everything that was left over. It’s a pity, but the important goal of child safety was achieved.

The socket insert is usually the same, with only the faceplate differing.

Yes, but Busch-Jäger doesn’t really offer individual faceplates. You have to buy the entire outlet. So you put the inserts in, and they fit.

Because of our children, we initially had adhesive plastic plates as child safety covers in all the outlets throughout the house. Over time, they came loose one by one, so they were unreliable.

There are also inserts that you attach using the central screw of the faceplate. They hold permanently without any adhesive.

Same situation with my Merten M boxes. However, you should check whether the front plates and wall inserts match each other. I asked if only the “shutters” were available as spare parts, but apparently only the front plates are sold as complete units. So I bought complete sockets and only changed the front plates. Price per piece around 5 EUR (about 5 USD). Instead of a makeshift solution, something proper.

But just dispose of them? Should you sell sensitive items like sockets privately, or rather not? An online retailer I contacted does not accept returns of these. Does anyone actually buy used sockets without warranty or guarantee?

I would generally avoid buying used power outlets from anyone. On the other hand, that decision is up to each individual. If I were the seller and hadn’t tampered with them, I wouldn’t have any concerns about selling them.
