Hello,

In spring 2015, I am planning to install my lawn for the first time. The single-family house was completed in 2013. The area is about 250 sqm (2,690 sq ft), with a slight slope (height difference about 30 cm (12 inches)) and full south/west exposure without much shade. There is an old, mature beech hedge dating back to the 1950s. The soil is poorly permeable and clayey. In October, a coarse culture substrate was newly applied to a depth of around 20 cm (8 inches). There was grass on this area at times during the last 40 years, but after demolition and rebuilding, most of it was gone. I want a low-maintenance, standard lawn that I can mow as needed (about once a week?). I’ve heard about play and sports grass mixes. My neighbor has gardening equipment like a rototiller, roller, seed spreader, etc. It is also planned to add more soil on top. The ground has already settled somewhat, and we still have about 15 cm (6 inches) to the edge of the terrace.

My question: Which type of grass or grass seed mix would you recommend for the above conditions? Price is not a major concern. Can anyone give me advice?
P.S. Another neighbor used the cheapest seeds from the hardware store, spread them generously by hand and shovel over a large area, and kept reseeding the patchy spots. The lawn has become thick and looks good. But is that really the right approach, or not?

Thanks in advance.
