Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the removal of the baseboard on an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit. Specifically, I want to take off the baseboard because I need to move the shelf along a wall with an adjacent baseboard, and the baseboard gets in the way, especially when relocating it onto new flooring. However, I am unsure how the baseboard is attached and how to remove it without damaging either the shelf or the baseboard itself.

Has anyone had experience with how to best remove the KALLAX baseboard? Which tools are useful, and what should I pay close attention to? Thanks in advance for any advice!

The KALLAX baseboard is usually just snapped in and not screwed. It’s best to carefully pry it off between the baseboard and the shelf using a thin putty knife or a flat prying tool. It’s important to apply even pressure to avoid any deformation. If the baseboard is very tight, gently rocking it along the joint can also help. You generally won’t find any screws.

Removing the KALLAX baseboard is actually quite straightforward, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Preparation: Position the shelf so you have easy access to the baseboard. If you have taped it off, remove the tape beforehand.

2. Tools: A sturdy, flat putty knife works best. A screwdriver might damage the wood.

3. Procedure: Insert the putty knife at the back edge and gently pry to avoid breaking the tongue that snaps the baseboard into place. It can help to reposition the putty knife occasionally if it gets stuck—use several gentle pries rather than applying strong force.

4. Special consideration: Sometimes small plastic or metal clips are used to secure the baseboard. If you have these clips, you should release them first.

5. After removal: Check the joints for damage and clean the locking points if there is dust or resin residue.

I’m curious: Have you already moved or altered the shelf, prompting the removal of the baseboard?

Good question! The shelf has been in place for about 2 years, originally sitting directly on laminate flooring. Now I want to replace the laminate and reposition the KALLAX shelf close to the wall, which has a baseboard that conflicts with the KALLAX edging—so the baseboard needs to be removed. The shelf itself is otherwise intact, and I want to reassemble it without causing any damage.

Thanks for the tips regarding clips—I haven’t seen any of those so far.

It’s interesting how many people immediately think something complicated has to be done. Honestly, I wonder if the issue with the baseboard for KALLAX is somewhat overrated. You could argue: just lift the shelf, slightly score and replace the baseboard, or even leave it out entirely.

The baseboard basically only serves a visual purpose and keeps the shelf slightly elevated. So why go through all the detailed effort some describe? This often just makes things unnecessarily complicated, especially if you’re not a DIY expert.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the discussion here, but sometimes it’s okay to keep things simpler! 😉

The baseboard is snapped in, not screwed. Insert a thin spatula from below and gently pry it off. Nothing complicated.
