Hello house building forum,

I have been following your really constructive advice and tips for some time now. We are also about to realize our own house. It was really not easy for us (my wife and me) to agree on a floor plan. However, we now have what I think is a good floor plan that fits nicely on the plot, but my wife doesn’t want to have a view of the stairs from the dining area. Do you have any ideas on how we can integrate the stairs differently or better into the floor plan?

Brief details:
4 people
1.5-story house with a basement
PS: the entrance will still be rotated toward the driveway.

One more idea on this, if it’s even feasible.

How about placing the fireplace in the middle of the entrance area between the living room and the staircase?
I can imagine a see-through fireplace with passageways to the left and right of it.
Since the dimensions are missing and the upper floor (first floor) plan is not visible, my idea might be completely unrealistic, as it would require relocating the chimney.

I wouldn’t move the fireplace here right now, as it provides privacy for the basement stairwell that also leads up from there.

That’s a valid point.
Then perhaps the transparent chimney could be used entirely as a room divider with just an open passage on the left side.

The fireplace turned out slightly different than originally planned, designed as a see-through room divider between the living room and dining area. However, I could angle it into the hallway to serve as a partition towards the staircase. Good idea—I’ll have to draft a design for that. Thanks.

Hard to say.
Since the staircase has two quarter landings, you see relatively few steps but a large portion of the entire staircase length. I can imagine that the wall might feel quite oppressive in the stairwell.
I could see that more with a regular landing staircase.

Oh, I forgot to mention the basement 😉
I would wall off the lower stair area and install a door leading to the basement.
Then I would design the handrail as a wall, meaning to build a sloped masonry.
Since you have a large window spanning from wall to wall behind it, the structure will be solid but still feel open.
The walls in this area should be kept white.
