Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit that I really like, but unfortunately I’ve recently noticed an unpleasant issue: due to moisture, probably coming from the surrounding environment or possibly from a damp floor, noticeable warping is forming on the shelves and partially on the side panels. These distortions or waves not only affect the appearance but also negatively impact the stability of the KALLAX.

My question to the community is therefore quite specific: How can I effectively prevent moisture from causing warping on the KALLAX shelf? Are there proven methods to reduce or completely avoid the effects of moisture on this type of furniture?

I would appreciate any serious advice, preferably with practical examples or products that have been effective in similar situations.

Does anyone have experience with films that can be applied as a protective layer?

Yes, there are such products – special water-repellent coatings or sealants for wood-based materials can reduce moisture absorption but do not guarantee 100% protection, especially if the furniture is continuously exposed to moisture.

It is important that the film or sealant is applied completely and evenly; edges and undersides must also be treated, as water often penetrates there.

Breathable products are also recommended so that any moisture inside can escape without causing damage.

An additional tip: pay attention to room temperature and air circulation, as both significantly affect humidity levels.

It is generally difficult to completely prevent the formation of warping in chipboard furniture due to moisture exposure,

Absolutely true! But hey, with a bit of humor and the right measures, you can achieve a lot 😉

So, a little lifehack from me: some dehumidifiers and felt pads are already half the battle against those annoying waves.

And don’t forget to ventilate occasionally – sounds simple, but it’s really valuable.

Maybe we could start an experiment with different protective films? I think a community test series would be great :-)

Finally: if it does start to warp, just place a book or decorative item on top – it hides more than you’d expect. 🙂
