Hello,

we are planning to get 6 outdoor security cameras. They should be connected to a hard drive for recording when motion is detected. They also need to perform well in low light and have a viewing range of 20 m (65 feet). We want to connect them directly by cable, not use Wi-Fi.

Which outdoor cameras would you recommend?

Best regards

Unfortunately, I have no experience with this, but are you familiar with the issues related to video cameras?

Which issues do you mean?

I think he means the "legal" issue

Hi,
setting aside all legal aspects: what use are IR recordings if I can only barely make out masked people calmly breaking into my house?
In the end, you’ll be like Steven: the police will say thanks, and the footage will be thrown away because nobody really knows what to do with it.
Regular cameras combined with plenty of LED floodlights are probably more effective at deterring intruders. The unwanted clearance crew usually doesn’t like well-lit work areas. If they come at night at all, statistics show they are more likely to come during the day.

Best regards,

During the day, new houses are usually unoccupied since people need to earn money to afford the place. Most people are at home at night, which can sometimes lead to trouble (for example, the hunter who shot an intruder and was acquitted).

The legal aspect is, as mentioned, not that important as long as you don’t go overboard and stay within your property or at least film only public streets. Neighboring properties are off-limits and could cause serious issues, depending on the situation.

It would be great if you could mention the names/brands of the devices you’re using. I have been looking into Netgear Arlo cameras. They transmit via Wi-Fi and store footage directly online (making them theft-proof). Unfortunately, these run on batteries, and I would prefer ones with a power connection. However, I don’t have Ethernet cables laid outside. I would need two cameras to cover the key areas (carport driveway and the rear terrace).

From our experience with our camera (upCam), if you want reasonably good image quality, it quickly generates a lot of data traffic, which seriously affected our Wi-Fi bandwidth. That’s why we later installed wired connections.

You also have to consider that depending on how large the monitored area is (for example, a space with trees, a garden gate, etc.), there are many events that the camera detects as "motion" and start recording images. For instance, the swaying of trees/branches in the wind, the shifting shadows of the sun, passing cars, and much more.

In our case, that means about 6,000 images per day (!!!), each about 150 KB, so nearly 1 GB per day. The recordings go to a server, which has sufficient capacity. Of course, you could reduce the camera’s sensitivity, but then you’d still get many recordings of trees and shadows, while potentially missing important events like someone entering the property.

IMPORTANT: This camera monitors a large area. If you use a camera for close-range monitoring, for example, directly at the entrance door, naturally there will be far fewer events that trigger recordings.

Depending on your purpose, bear in mind that regular recording at decent image quality creates a significant amount of data traffic. And Wi-Fi performance is poor in this regard (Fritzbox 7490 with repeaters). Our next camera will be a Mobotix :-)

Hello Payday

The case mentioned is described rather briefly. Could you provide some more details?
I assume the hunter shot the burglar in self-defense (Section 32 of the Criminal Code). Naturally, one would be acquitted in Germany if a criminal is shot in self-defense.
