Why did the design turn out as it is now? For example,
Standard design from the planner? We roughly sketched our idea and the architect fully revised it. Still without windows etc., as we have several fundamentally different floor plans.
Overall, we are satisfied with the floor plan.
We still have a few changes/questions:
- Possibly omitting the door to the kitchen to allow for a larger corner cupboard there, since we don’t have a pantry.
- Removing the windbreak area between garage and house. We want to keep the passage open for now.
- We currently have a dining corner bench and want to keep it. Therefore, we are considering installing a wall (only as high as the corner bench or kitchen counter) between the kitchen and the corner bench.

It’s common to start with just room layouts. But then, when refining, to already consider wall thicknesses, chimney locations, and even some furniture, but still no windows, is quite an unusual approach. Well, maybe new methods will lead to new results.
Were the other two options dismissed solely because of better adaptation to the neighbor, or did they also lack other noteworthy details?

The proposals focused on the basic orientation of the house on the plot. The development plan specifies a gable roof with the roof ridge facing west-east. One option involved rotating the house by 90°, so the longer side faced north-south. That looked odd because the ridge then ran along the shorter side. Another option placed the master bedroom on the upper floor. We simply did not like some aspects of these options. That’s how we arrived at the current design, which we actually like very much. Before—or better yet, while—the architect continues working, we wanted to introduce some other ideas.
