Our selection appointment is approaching, so I would like to ask for some feedback. I know it’s a fairly standard, plain house, but it suits us well.

Attached you will find the house elevations from the four cardinal directions. Could you please advise where and how many exterior lights you would install on the outer walls? I’m unsure whether one or two exterior lights on a 9.40m (31 feet) wall might be too few. The house is 9.20m (30 feet) high including the roof. Without the roof, meaning the wall height, it is 6.51m (21 feet). At a later stage, we might add shutters, if that is relevant for the placement of the exterior lights.

The blue dots mark my initial suggested mounting points. On the east and west sides, I have initially planned two exterior lights each, and on the south and north sides, one each. Our main terrace will be on the west side. On the other three sides, there will only be small seating areas, more like garden spots than terraces.

There will also be various other lighting fixtures in the garden among the plants, but their exact locations will be decided during the landscaping planning. We might also add solar-powered gutter lights to the rain gutters, but that would be at a later time.

Two-story house with a pitched roof; east and west view, window, door and garage.

Two-story house with solar thermal roof (SOUTH); north view with carport and cars.

I can explain how I do it:
One light is installed at the front door, and another at the terrace.
I have no need for any decorative lighting on the house itself.
If I want more lighting in the future, either solar lights will be attached there, or my father-in-law will extend the wiring.

When I drive through the new housing developments here and look at the exterior house lighting, I would personally wait for the results from my plasterer... The wave-like patterns that are partially illuminated there are not something I would want to highlight.

I would approach it quite differently. Which areas do you spend time in, and which areas are just passageways? We have installed two lights with motion sensors on each facade. The lights only turn on when someone passes by and illuminate only the facade, providing indirect lighting that is enough for orientation and also helps the cameras. Only the terrace is lit up into the room.

That is indeed an important point! Fortunately, we had a skilled exterior plasterer. 😉

I like to have the walkways well lit, and if guests are sitting on the patio, there should also be enough light if needed. That’s why we planned our lights similarly to those shown here. I might also consider spacing the patio lights a bit further apart or adding two more.

In the next few weeks, we will also be updating the lighting around our house. Some darker areas will be illuminated with corner lights. Maybe this could be an idea for you as well?
