Hello everyone,

I am planning to place my new Kallax shelf directly on my hardwood floor. Since I know that unprotected furniture legs or feet often cause scratches and signs of wear, I want to avoid this issue from the start. My question is: What type of glides are best suited for a Kallax shelf on hardwood flooring?

Important factors for me are floor protection, stability of the shelf, and ease of installation. Maybe you also have experience with specific materials or brands that have proven to be particularly effective. I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

I recommend felt gliders; they are soft, protect the parquet floor, and are easy to stick on. Alternatively, plastic gliders can also work—they are more durable but less gentle on the floor.

Felt pads are popular but can be problematic if the shelf is moved frequently because the felt wears out quickly and collects dirt, which can scratch the surface and cause surface contamination.

For a Kallax, which has no legs but a solid wooden base, I would prefer non-slip yet hard glides made of nylon or Teflon. These can often be glued or screwed under the base and prevent scratches without accumulating dust.

You should also check the adhesive strength, as a fully loaded shelf can be quite heavy.

That's true, you shouldn't really move the Kallax shelf too often anyway, but felt pads are great for protecting the floor.

I installed felt pads from the hardware store on my shelf myself, and after several months, there are no scratches at all – the hardwood floor is very happy 🙂

My tip: clean both the surface and the pads well before sticking them on, so they will hold firmly. And for extra comfort, you can also place a thin rubber mat under each shelf – it provides additional grip and prevents slipping.
