Hello everyone,
I’m planning to get a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, but I have tile flooring in my apartment. My question is whether there are any issues I should be aware of when using KALLAX on tile floors. Specifically, I’m interested in aspects like stability, possible scratches on the floor caused by the furniture, tipping behavior on a smooth surface, and noise when moving it. Has anyone had experience with KALLAX on tiles and can tell me if I need any additional measures like felt pads or similar, or if there are any problems with weight capacity or stability? I’d appreciate any tips!

However, it is important to attach felt pads or edge protectors to protect the floor from scratches. Tiles are hard and sensitive to point loads, but the furniture itself is very stable and only at risk of tipping if it is not properly assembled or overloaded. For a steady base, I also recommend using non-slip pads under the feet, especially if there is a lot of movement around the furniture.
Hey Meodra! It’s great that you’re asking about the proper use of KALLAX on tiles! 🙂 I have a KALLAX in our living room standing on tiles and haven’t had any issues for years! The combination works really well if you attach some felt pads – it protects the floor and makes moving it easy without scratching. The stability is excellent, I even have heavy books in there, everything is solid and secure. So go ahead, it works perfectly! :-)

non-slip pads under the feetGood idea. I would always recommend adding felt pads for tiles as well. They prevent scratches and provide gentle grip. KALLAX is stable once fully assembled.
Just to be provocative: Do you really have to worry constantly about the floor getting damaged by a KALLAX shelf? Tiles are quite durable. As long as you don’t use the furniture as a battering ram, nothing will happen. And constantly attaching felt pads or other protectors seems a bit like overengineering. I would focus more on making sure the furniture is properly level – otherwise, just relax. Experience shows that many of these concerns are more psychological.

Tiles are quite durableI somewhat disagree. Tiles can definitely be damaged by point loads, such as when moving furniture without protection. KALLAX has sharp edges and the feet don’t have rubber pads. For a tile floor, I definitely recommend felt pads to prevent permanent scratches. Stability is not negatively affected – on the contrary, these protective measures improve grip and reduce noise from friction.
