Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific problem and hope to get some good advice here: My KALLAX shelf from IKEA has been deeply scratched by my cats’ claws. The scratches are quite deep and have damaged the wood-look veneer, making it look pretty worn out. I have already tried using furniture markers and some polish to improve it, but the damage is quite stubborn.

Does anyone have experience with repair methods specifically for KALLAX furniture? Is there a way to professionally or at least semi-professionally fix such scratches without having to replace the entire shelf? Maybe you have tips on suitable products or simple DIY tricks that are also manageable for less experienced users.

Thanks in advance for your help!

For repairing deeper scratches, I recommend first applying wood filler, then lightly sanding it, followed by painting or staining with a matching color. After that, seal the surface – done.

Oh dear, cat scratch marks are unfortunately really stubborn – but not hopeless! 😊

I’ve read that wood repair kits with wax or resin work great for smaller dents. You can simply warm the pieces and then press them into the scratches in a folding motion – afterwards, it almost looks like new.

Maybe you could try that on the KALLAX as well? 😊

Since your scratches are deep, sanding the surface smooth beforehand would definitely make sense, so the wax can adhere well. And if the finish needs to be refreshed later, it will make applying paint or clear coat easier.

Good luck!

In general, the plastic or foil coatings on KALLAX units are not as easy to repair as solid wood surfaces. For deep scratches, I recommend the following systematic approach:

1. Clean the surface to remove dust and grease
2. Fill the deep scratches with a special wood or plastic filler
3. Lightly sand off any excess filler using fine-grit sandpaper, grit 240 or higher
4. Recolor the area with a matching furniture or wood touch-up pen
5. Finish with a clear varnish or clear lacquer spray

This method helps protect the furniture from further damage and improves its appearance.

Alternative: Adhesive films that match the color of KALLAX can also help conceal visual imperfections, providing a solution aside from repair products.

I can confirm that, but your KALLAX might not be made of solid wood, but rather coated particleboard. In that case, wood filler is sometimes not ideal because it does not always adhere properly.

Therefore, I would specifically use a plastic or furniture repair filler designed for laminate or coated surfaces.

Also important: after filling, gently sand the area and match it with a furniture touch-up pen that closely matches the color.

If you’re unsure, you can test small, inconspicuous spots first.

If the cat scratches happen frequently, it may be worthwhile to consider protective measures in the long run, such as placing cat scratching boards near the KALLAX to preserve the shelf.
