Hello everyone!

I have a fairly specific problem with my IKEA Kallax shelf, which I use as a plant stand. Water stains keep appearing on the surface under the plants, which of course looks unattractive and could cause damage over time. I water carefully, but sometimes water runs down from the saucers or directly from the bottom of the pots.

Of course, I have already tried placing protective layers underneath and wiping up excess water, but the stains remain stubborn.

So my question is: What are practical and sustainable ways to prevent this problem with a Kallax shelf? Are there special protective mats, oils, or even arrangements for the plants that can stop water from coming into direct contact with the wood? I don’t want to completely rebuild or replace the shelf, but rather look for simple and effective solutions.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Oh yes, I know that all too well!

I used to have water stains under my plants on the Kallax as well. It’s really frustrating because the surfaces aren’t fully waterproof. In my experience, the best solution is always to use a waterproof mat, such as laid-out plastic sheets or specially designed plant saucers with edges.

Sometimes it’s enough to place the plants in decorative pots and then put a plastic tray underneath that you empty regularly.

What I found challenging was balancing appearance and protection. But you get used to it. 🙂

How big are your plants, and have you already tried any kind of protective layer?

I would place waterproof mats or trays directly under the pots. This creates a clean barrier.

You can also glue foam rubber or cork under the coasters. This absorbs moisture and prevents water from running directly onto the wood.

The root of the problem often lies in the fact that the amount of water when watering exceeds the capacity of the saucers, or that the pots don’t retain enough water.

My suggestion would be to first check the containers carefully: Are they watertight? How large are the drainage holes? When the plants are watered normally, excess water should not constantly come into contact with the wood.

I have had very good experiences with recessed plastic trays that fit exactly into the Kallax cubes. These can be cleaned and inspected separately.

Additionally, I recommend regularly adjusting the watering intervals—perhaps watering less at once but more frequently to avoid waterlogging.

If it’s of interest: which plant species do you have on your Kallax? Some require completely different watering strategies.

That is practical, but the question is how sustainable this solution really is.

Won’t these materials eventually become susceptible to mold? And how environmentally friendly are plastic trays when purchased in large quantities?

Perhaps an alternative would be to treat the Kallax shelf itself?

Does anyone have experience with surface treatments, such as special wood stain or varnish, that prevent water penetration without ruining the appearance? That might be more sustainable than constantly replacing mats.
