Hello everyone,
I have been dealing with a mold problem on the floor directly beneath my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit for some time now. The unit stands on a laminate floor in a well-insulated living space that doesn’t have particularly high humidity levels—at least this is what I have confirmed using a hygrometer. Nevertheless, dark mold growth appears especially where the shelving touches the floor.
I suspect this might be due to poor air circulation or possibly moisture buildup, but I am unsure how to prevent this permanently without moving the shelving or undertaking major interventions.
My question to you: Are there any proven methods or tips to specifically avoid mold developing on the floor under the KALLAX? Solutions that are practical and address possible causes such as moisture or condensation would be particularly helpful.
Thank you in advance for your support!

I suspect it might be due to poor air circulation or possibly moisture buildupThis assumption is well founded. Mold often develops from a combination of moisture and insufficient air movement. For furniture placed directly on the floor, moisture can accumulate because the floor cools down, especially at night or during cold seasons, causing condensation.
Possible solutions:
1. Use spacers or small furniture feet to allow air circulation under the KALLAX.
2. Place a vapor barrier or a special underlay with insulating properties beneath the shelving unit.
3. Regularly ventilate the room by opening windows briefly, especially in the morning and evening, to reduce humidity.
4. In particularly damp rooms, using a dehumidifier is advisable.
Of course, the building materials and floor structure are also relevant if moisture rises from below. In this case, a professional craftsman could provide further assessments.
In conclusion: Without sufficient ventilation, mold is hardly avoidable in the long term.

It’s best to place the shelf on small spacersThat’s brilliant! 🙂 I did exactly that by attaching small felt pads under the feet. Now the air can circulate much better, and I’ve actually noticed a clear reduction in mold after just a few weeks.
Also, I would definitely recommend regular ventilation—ideally several times a day for 5–10 minutes with full airing. This helps prevent moisture from settling in the room.
I think this simple combination is often enough to avoid unpleasant moisture and mold. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it works for you too! 🙂
