Hello everyone,

I would like to paint my interior walls in a different color now. At the moment, I am thinking of a shade of gray.

My idea was to buy white paint and black paint and mix them myself. Should I do this on my own or rather have it done at a hardware store, for example, Toom?

I’m looking forward to any tips and tricks on this topic.

Best regards,

The problem with mixing paint yourself is the lack of consistent repeatability. In some areas of the house, we have a latte macchiato-like color on the wall. My brother is a master painter and could have mixed it himself. Still, we chose to have it done at Hagebau, so we now have a defined color tone that we can reorder for touch-ups. Which we have already done.

Latte Macchiato is also tricky: if at some point you prefer it stronger or with more milk, it immediately changes.
Jokes aside:
Gray is not just black and white; it also contains other color pigments, commonly some red to give it a taupe shade or blue for a cool gray.
You can a) easily miss the mark and b) as nordlys mentioned.

If you decide to mix colors yourself, make sure to use sterile tools. Gray tones develop better when mixing red and green with white, and you should not be too sparing with the colorful pigments. Each vibrant color has its own appeal. Gray made from black and white alone tends to look dull. Before use, you can take some of the paint and cover it with a piece of plastic wrap to protect it from oxygen. Putting a lid on it and storing it in the refrigerator will preserve it much longer than usual. It is possible to replicate colors, but not everyone can do it accurately. As a basis, you should apply each color you used to a sample board. If you don’t work with paints often, I would not recommend trying this yourself.

Having the paint mixed professionally is safer.

Why do you want to do it on your own? I don't see any need for that, but rather a risk.
Every painting service or home improvement store can mix everything you need without any significant extra cost.

And it's better to buy somewhat more expensive paint from a professional paint supplier rather than a hardware store, as it usually provides better coverage.
