Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my electrical installation and wondering:

What is the easiest way to digitally monitor the electricity consumption of an entire house? Preferably with minute-by-minute accuracy. Can you recommend any hardware with an (open) interface? What I do not want is a smart meter that sends data directly to my electricity provider.
What do you use for your smart homes?

Best regards

Submeter with S0 interface mounted on the DIN rail. Connect a data logger of your choice to it.

Find out which type of electricity meter will be installed by the metering point operator. These meters usually include an IR interface today. This is an optical data interface called D0, which transmits information in SML format. This provides more data than a standard S0 interface. The D0 interface can be read and logged using an IR sensor (optocoupler) and, for example, a Raspberry Pi (more cost-effective than a high-quality S0 meter). Your metering point operator may need to enable this feature. Check online for volkszaehler.

If you install a photovoltaic system or heat pump, their generation and consumption should be recorded separately. The best method depends on the specific equipment.

Unfortunately, the meters provided by the utility company do not offer any benefits to the end customer, and their functions are often disabled. Retrieving S0 pulses is also cheaper with commercial solutions compared to D0. If you want to DIY, it might be different.

I also have an S0 meter, along with a Solarlog. This shows the current consumption (and production in my case) in real time. The S0 meter cost a few euros. The most expensive part was the Solarlog; there might be cheaper alternatives available.

Thank you very much. That’s exactly what I need. I missed it while searching. Using that keyword, I now find a lot of good information and hardware. Very nice.

I don’t have photovoltaics or a heat pump. As soon as it comes to the specific meter, I will make sure it is compatible. Alternatively, a second meter can be installed after the provider’s meter. At first glance, it can fit fairly compactly into the cabinet.
