Good morning everyone, some time ago I bought the Ikea Malm bedside table, and unfortunately, the surface has become quite scratched in several places. It is the white model with a foil surface, not solid wood or lacquered. My question is: What is the easiest and most effective way to repair these scratches without damaging the surface or significantly affecting the material? Has anyone had experience with special repair kits, household remedies, or proven techniques to improve the appearance? I would prefer not to replace the entire bedside table or have to sand it down extensively. Thank you in advance for your tips!

Wow, that’s a really practical question! 🙂 I had the same problem with my Malm bedside table, and what helped me a lot was a special furniture repair kit! For example, there are wax sticks and polish that you can gently work into the scratches. This quickly restores the appearance without much effort. The great thing is: you don’t need professional experience, anyone can do it! So just be a little brave and tackle the scratches – the result is really satisfying! 🙂 I would just try looking for “furniture repair kit” on Amazon or at a hardware store. Good luck!

Hello anfo4, I’m quite familiar with the issue of scratches on laminate surfaces of furniture – it’s really frustrating, especially when the nightstand is otherwise in excellent condition. 🙂 Besides repair kits, there are some home remedies I’ve tried: for example, a small amount of toothpaste applied with a soft cloth and gently rubbed often helps with light scratches. Don’t expect miracles, but it does smooth the surface a bit. Warning: make sure to use toothpaste without abrasive particles! For deeper scratches, sometimes a fine abrasive sponge followed by an appropriate furniture polish can help. It’s always important to proceed carefully to avoid further damage to the laminate. Hopefully, this info is somewhat helpful, good luck! 😉

Exactly, that is my recommendation.

Alternatively: match wood repair markers or furniture touch-up pens from a hardware store to the color, then apply carefully and rub dry.

I think it is important to carefully assess the surface before taking any action. The Malm nightstand has a plastic laminate surface, correct? This means sanding is usually counterproductive because the laminate is very thin and the particleboard lies underneath.

That’s true; this is more of a temporary trick for very light scratches.

In such a case, I would first try to correct the color using furniture touch-up markers that closely match the surface color. If the nightstand is white, be careful with color shades!

Another option is to apply a matte clear protective film as a surface protector – this helps prevent future scratches and makes it easier to replace the film if it gets damaged.

Has anyone here had experience with these types of films?
