Hello everyone,
I have a Malm dresser from IKEA that is unfortunately quite dirty. The main issue is stains and slight discoloration on the surface, probably caused by everyday marks like drink spills or dust that have settled over time.
I’m particularly interested in how to clean the dresser properly and gently, without damaging the surface or affecting the finish. Which cleaning products are suitable, and which should I definitely avoid?
Also, it would be helpful if someone could provide a step-by-step guide on the best way to clean this specific dresser and its material.
Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

The Malm dresser is usually made of melamine-coated particleboard, which is quite sensitive to water. Therefore, please make sure to:
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners.
- Do not use alcohol-based or acidic cleaners without first testing on an inconspicuous area.
- Use cloths dry or only slightly damp.
My recommendation for gentle cleaning:
1. Wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth.
2. Prepare a mild solution by mixing about 1 drop of dish soap into 1 liter (1 quart) of water.
3. Wring out a lint-free cloth in the solution so that it is almost dry.
4. Gently clean the dresser with the cloth.
5. Immediately wipe again with a dry cloth.
For organic stains (e.g., coffee, fruit), prompt removal is important to prevent discoloration.
This method is widely recommended and proven effective in furniture care.

Hello,
I can fully support cassandra’s recommendation. Additionally, I would like to add that for stubborn stains, you can gently work with an eraser, but only spot treat carefully and with caution.
For cleaning, I usually use a microfiber cloth and lukewarm water with a small amount of neutral dish soap, making sure to wring out the cloth well and immediately wipe again.
It’s also worth mentioning that, if possible, the dresser should not be exposed to direct sunlight or heat, as this makes the surface more prone to staining.
Good luck with the cleaning 🙂

I will make sure to use only slightly damp cloths.
One more question for everyone: What about polish or furniture wax? Are they suitable for the surface of the Malm dresser or better to avoid? I want to clean it but also care for it a bit without causing any damage.
