Hello everyone,
I am looking for a way to detect if a key is left in the front door lock.
Background: My wife insists on unlocking the front door with a key and then regularly leaves it inserted from the outside. Our neighborhood is not the safest, and the car key is attached to it as well.
I want to make sure that the key is not left in the lock all night and that the home security system triggers an alarm if all the lights go out in the evening while a key is still in the lock. Does anyone have any ideas or know of a lock cylinder that can provide such a notification?
Thank you very much in advance.
Best regards

You could also consider a different approach: requiring the key to be in a precisely defined location within a certain time frame. At my workplace, there is a box where the keys for rental and company cars are kept. The box is opened using an ID badge. Afterwards, you select the number of the key. The key fob looks like a 6.3mm (1/4 inch) audio jack plug, which allows the system to detect when a key is available. Something like this could also be built. A door sensor at the front door could start a timer when opened, as long as the key is not in the key box. After a certain amount of time, an alarm would sound. If you open the front door for a visitor, nothing happens because the key is still in the box.
Just an idea—I’m not sure how practical it would be to implement.

Just an idea, no clue if it’s practically feasible. Yes, it is. I really like the idea of shifting the warning from "key is still outside" to "key is not inside."
My preferred designated spot for the key would be the lock (interior side). It would need to be monitored whether the key reaches that spot within x seconds after opening. The door would have to be shielded on the outside so that the receiver does not mistakenly detect the RFID tag as being in the desired area when it is still outside. In other words: one side of the door would need a shielding plate so that the system only registers a valid signal on the inside.
