ᐅ Front door with 5-point or 3-point automatic locking system?

Hello,

we need to decide on the front door for our new build.

We can choose between:

A door with a 5-point locking system (standard)

or a door with a 3-point automatic locking system (extra cost of 160€) that automatically locks itself but can always be opened from the inside.

The disadvantage of the 3-point automatic locking is that it only has 3 locking bolts instead of 5.

The advantage is that the door is always locked, so you don’t have to remember to lock it.

Has anyone had experience with the automatic locking system?

Which door would you recommend?

@Bertram100
You are still free to do so. You can always turn the key and lock it as usual. Depending on the type of lock you have installed, there are different options.

The advantage is that the door is always locked, regardless of whether you have turned the key or not.

But that doesn’t really contribute to the topic’s question.
Comments like “absurd,” “I don’t drive a car,” “then I’ll lock myself out,” etc. don’t help at all.

@Tarnari Do we really want to evaluate every comment based on its relevance to the original poster’s question? That would quiet things down quickly here. The OP had several offers and was unsure what to do. What harm is there if he reads five more opinions, especially since he hasn’t even complained so far? For example, in my own house building thread, I’ve read opinions I didn’t like or that didn’t address the question. Still, the person took the time to share their thoughts on the topic. So I read it, and afterwards, I viewed some things differently than before those posts. Certainly, I didn’t tell anyone their post was off-topic.
I really can’t understand the “upset.” I installed a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery even though I thought it was nonsense at first, I informed myself as best I could about KNX and so on, and ultimately decided against it because I found it pointless FOR ME. For me!

You have to “be able to be generous”

Why would you doubt that?

Now that’s what I call a factual explanation, and FOR ME, I conclude I wouldn’t even pay $10 more for that because it wouldn’t bring me a noticeable benefit.
My friend wouldn’t spend $10 on a nice painting, but I would spend $1,000 if I like it and have the means.
Whew... maybe it’s been too long with Corona or it’s just Friday evening—time for the weekend... WOMMMMMM

@pagoni2020 I really appreciate you.
Why do you emphasize that you have a balanced mechanical ventilation system? Why do you emphasize that you decided against KNX despite researching it?
That’s completely unnecessary. You’re about to have a great house. I’m sure of it!
Again, why do terms like “absurd” need to be used in discussions like this?
Has anyone here said it’s “absurd” not to install such a lock? Or not to use KNX? Or to have no pool? Or anything like that?
We are in a house-building forum. People usually come here with specific questions and want support.

This often reminds me of my past nerd phase:
“Hello dear ‘insert any PC forum here.’ I need a new computer. I want to set up network-attached storage for my photos. What RAID level, which CPU, and how much RAM do you think is best?”
Then you get answers like:
“Why all that? Nobody needs it. I’ve been fine with my USB drive for years.”
Completely meaningless.

However, I agree with you. This kind of discussion helps no one and may have driven away the original poster. That’s why I’m staying silent.
If I’m lucky, maybe someone will think about it.
People constantly tell me I’m too thin. I have said to someone else that they were too heavy. No one ever feels ashamed about being thin…

As a point in favor for the older folks here… (since anyone can find themselves in an emergency at home) … from personal experience:

A call at 4 a.m., police and fire department at the door, emergency situation, 20 km (12 miles) away, you grab a key and rush over, driving 180 km/h (110 mph) on the city highway, just arriving in the driveway, the fire department has already broken down the patio door. In that situation, it’s completely understandable. With automatic remote unlocking, help would arrive faster and there would be no material damage at all. So this is not just some unnecessary extra feature…

Dear @Tarnari

I emphasize the topic of controlled residential ventilation/KNX systems, etc., to show that sometimes I do have a preconceived opinion that comes from somewhere else. Usually, we don’t even fully understand what really influences our decisions. I stress this because I sometimes surprise myself and am glad that I can also be convinced by things I previously considered unnecessary.

I also wouldn’t like a harsh judgment like “absurd” or similar, especially when it’s stated as a general truth. For example, I know my heating technology is considered absurd or wrong here, even though some modern architects or energy consultants support it. Here, it simply has no chance for discussion, so I keep my experiences, pictures, etc., to myself. In that sense, I understand the criticism of calling something “absurd.” But it doesn’t get better when the supposed opposing side generalizes that view as if there really is a generational conflict between old and young. From my perspective, sometimes young homeowners think as “old” as I probably never will.

I consider the users involved in this brief squabble among the few competent and moderate members whose posts I always enjoy reading. Since @hampshire is no longer around, his open approach to many topics is noticeably missed here.

Recently, I was called an “old-timer” from a generation that’s supposedly always had everything handed to them on a silver platter because I shared my perspective from two different building periods, 1990 and 2021, thinking someone might be interested in how things were, not just as a threat or know-it-all behavior. But I was mistaken.

When @Bertram100 shares her viewpoint here, I find it interesting, and I can decide for myself if it fits. As a non-car owner and self-confessed low consumer, she already does something many here only talk about.

Well, I wasn’t a “nerd,” but I’ve always been interested in innovation, so I know those annoying replies from the professional environment. Still, I can ask myself whether something new means innovation (for me) or is just junk (for me), and sometimes it is junk—for others, it may be completely different.
Tarnari schrieb:

But I agree with you. This discussion helps no one and might have even put off the original poster. That’s why I’m just quiet.

Exactly—you should not be quiet! We always need many different answers and viewpoints; there’s enough mainstream everywhere already.
Tarnari schrieb:

I already know one!

That’s exactly what I keep criticizing: that people hardly want to consider other views and defend their own to the bitter end. In fact, our house here was influenced to a large extent by participating users. I found that very enriching and am grateful for it. This applied equally to technical matters as well as to individual experiences and personal life stories. Unfortunately, those are becoming rarer, while technicians and number crunchers are increasing—and personally, I don’t like that.

I understand you! I know a young man who is always first told how tall he is. He plays basketball, but he was tall before that anyway. Had someone not clearly said in front of me that this annoys him, I might have missed it. Being thin is considered desirable nowadays; being fat is often immediately seen as antisocial. In Tonga, it’s the opposite, and people there tend to be happier than here.

Well—enough talking for now. I am actually sure that we, who have talked things through here, basically have more in common than with many others. After all, you get to know people over time.

Buenas noches…..

Would you now recommend a front door with a triple automatic locking system? So that you don’t have to lock it manually every time.

A front door with triple locking is sufficient.

And we can also open the automatically locking door with Nuki.
