HWMenge-126 Jul 2012 17:31Hello everyone, I hope I’m in the right subcategory here.
Here is my question: I want to run an electrical cable from the house to my garden shed. However, digging a deep trench with sand bedding is too labor-intensive for me. Is it possible to run the cable just below the surface inside a plastic conduit?
From a technical standpoint, this shouldn’t be a problem, but I’m unsure whether it’s allowed, especially regarding insurance requirements.

Low-voltage power cables should be buried at a depth of 60–80 cm (24–31 inches).
Of course, you can dig shallower at your own risk. However, if the area is open terrain (lawn, garden beds, etc.), problems are likely. Sooner or later, someone will accidentally hit the cable with a hoe. Additionally, soil near the surface shifts more frequently, which puts tensile stress on the cables. Plastic conduits, in particular, are sensitive to temperature fluctuations that are common near the surface.

MODERATOR1 Nov 2012 19:10I agree with wno; the regulations regarding electrical installations have their reasons.
A 60cm (24 inches) deep trench for an underground cable is not that complicated; it can be done quite quickly with a hoe. The effort is worth it for safety reasons.
Actually, in Germany, you are not allowed to lay and connect electrical cables without being a licensed electrician.

I have to say that this building regulation should definitely be followed. Even renting a small mini excavator to dig the trench is worthwhile here in any case. This is also about issues such as voles, weather conditions, and so on, which is why the specified excavation depth is necessary.

Richard-131 Mar 2014 05:30I am also concerned about this question because I want to create something similar. Technically, it is possible, but building regulations prohibit it. These cables should be buried at least 60 cm (24 inches) underground. At this depth, the underground cable is well protected.
