Hello. Our tiler recommended laying some kind of membrane in the bathroom to protect the screed from water damage in case of a leak. Many insurance companies reportedly would not cover claims without this membrane/waterproofing. I have never heard of this before and couldn’t find any information about it online.
Is what he says true, or is he just trying to make money?
We have planned to install vinyl flooring in the bathroom, which will be glued down.

Phew, that’s a tough one for me.
But now you know that you need this waterproofing. The tile installer is usually not allowed to work without waterproofing (I’m not sure why he only "recommends" it), so I wouldn’t want to take any risks. I quickly found an article on a building damage portal (.de) where the waterproofing was missing and wastewater leaked into the structure through a non-tight fitting joint (yuck, by the way). The homeowner was left responsible for 50% of the costs. The other half was covered by the installer’s insurance.

Why don't you just waterproof the entire bathroom with liquid membrane? Is it failing now because of the additional maximum 200 euros? That way, you wouldn’t have to worry about any potential insurance issues, and you would definitely be on the safe side with peace of mind...
