ᐅ KALLAX shelf too loose after moving – I think I assembled it correctly, any ideas?

KjerstiHello everyone,
After my recent move, I noticed that my KALLAX shelf suddenly feels quite loose, even though I assembled it exactly the same way as the first time – the screws are tight, and everything fits as intended. Still, the shelf wobbles so much that it worries me. I checked if the floor is level and the shelf is standing securely, but there is simply too much play in the joints.
My question to you: Has anyone had a similar experience with the KALLAX after moving? Are there any details or technical tips I might have missed during the reassembly? I want to avoid damaging the shelf unnecessarily or ending up with an unstable storage unit in the long run.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Kjersti,
I completely understand your frustration; many people underestimate how sensitive furniture like the KALLAX can be to different placement locations. Even if you assembled everything correctly, stability can vary after a move.
Here are a few points you should check:
1. Wall attachment: Originally, you may have nailed or fixed the shelf to the wall using brackets. If this is missing now, it will be noticeably less stable.
2. Tighten screws again: Due to stresses during transport, screws may not be fully tightened. Retightening them often helps.
3. Floor flatness: You say the floor is level, but small variations or soft coverings (carpet/laminate) can cause the unit to tilt.
4. Cross braces: On KALLAX shelves, the back panels are often just slotted in. Check that the back panel is properly seated and undamaged.
5. Additional fasteners: You can add stabilizing brackets afterwards if the shelf is moved frequently.
Once you have checked these points, feel free to get back to me, and we can look into it further together. Often, it’s a small detail causing the issue.
Good luck!

Tightening again often helps.I can only agree with that!
I once took apart and reassembled my KALLAX after a bit of a rearrangement frenzy, and I thought everything was tightly fastened.
Then I realized that some screws were barely halfway tightened. After that, the shelf was stable again – no more wobbling. 🙂
Also, moving it can loosen the back panel a little. Just check if it’s properly seated and not warped.
And my tip: if you put small rubber pads underneath, nothing will slide, and the shelf will stand firmer even on uneven floors.
I’m curious to see what works for you in the end. Good luck! 😉

Hello Kjersti,
after reading your description, I have a few additional tips for you:
- Sometimes IKEA does not explicitly mention that heavy shelves should also be secured to the wall. Especially during moves, small wear and tear can occur at the connection points, which may only become noticeable later.
- Also check the pull-out drawers or inserts to see if all flaps and attachments are properly fixed. These can shift during transport and affect the balance.
- It’s best to completely unload the shelf and rebuild it. If possible, get a second person to help. This often makes it easier to assemble the parts precisely.
I can recommend that as well. The back panel is often underestimated, but it is an important stabilizer that holds the shelf together.
If none of this helps, you can find inexpensive brackets at the hardware store to secure the shelf further without spoiling the appearance too much.
I hope you find the right solution! 🙂
