I recently bought a Kallax shelf unit from Ikea and installed the anti-tip straps for wall mounting. Unfortunately, I noticed that the screws holding the straps were pulled right out of the particleboard. This means the straps don’t hold properly, and the shelf could tip over.
Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any proven materials or techniques to avoid this problem with particleboard? How do you securely attach your Kallax shelves to the wall to ensure they are truly safe?

One solution is to reinforce the screw areas with wood glue plus wooden dowels, or to attach a thin hardwood board on the back. Metal brackets also significantly increase stability.
It is also important that the screws are not placed too close to the edge, as this quickly reduces the strength.

I would like to start from the basics: Particle boards are naturally prone to tearing out when screws apply point loads, especially if the boards are thin and lack additional reinforcement.
One option is to embed small insert nuts or so-called tension nuts into the particle board before screwing. Alternatively, spring plates can be used, which provide a larger surface area and distribute the pressure.
If you are already using anti-tip devices, make sure to attach them directly to a load-bearing wall structure and ideally reinforce the board itself (e.g., by gluing hardwood strips behind it).
Many of my clients rely on heavy-duty anchors for wall mounting and combine this with three-point fixing: top, middle, and bottom of the shelf. They also use longer screws to ensure additional tear resistance. Better safe than sorry :-)
